Fire Science:

Our Pre-K friends came up with ideas of what a fire needs in order to stay lit.

A fire needs a wick!

We experimented with different substances to see what the fire would consume. We tried putting water, sand and olive oil in little glass cups.

We took guesses onto how long each wick would stay lit. Here are actual results:

Wick in water: 1 Second

Wick in Sand: 8 Seconds

Wick in Olive oil: 12600 Seconds!

We made a red line to mark where the oil was when we lit the fire. When the fire went out we observed that the oil was consumed! Fire consumes oil.

All these fire facts helped us really gain an appreciation for the Chanuka story.

The Kohanim light the Menorah and the little oil that is supposed to only last for one day lasts for eight! Hashem made a miracle! This gave the Maccabi's enough time to prepare new olive oil for the Menorah. We celebrate Chanukah by lighting the Menorah for eight days to remember the eight days the oil lasted.

Chanukah begins friday night, December 11th and goes on for eight days lasting until Saturday the 19th of December. We would love to see pictures of your child lighting their menorah in their homes. Please take pictures and email it to us so that we can display them in our classroom.
