Measurement

We continue learning about measurements. We discovered that some things can be light and some can be heavy. In the class we played with the set of cylinders that looked absolutely the same but somehow some of them were heavier than others. To find which of the cylinders are heavier, we used a balance. A simple balance has two pans on a bar. It reminded us a seesaw. A seesaw moves up and down. So does the bar on a balance. We noticed that the pan with the heavier cylinder goes always down, with lighter- up. In the class we tried to make a balance.

Morah told us a story about a special worm. It was not an ordinary worm, it was an inch worm. The inch worm was famous in his garden, all birds and other animals would come to him in case they need to measure something: a wing, a tail or a beautiful feather. He was one very smart worm. In our human world we can't use worms for measuring. We can use different things: apples, coins, chips, hands, feet.... but the results will be different. How we could find out how long is a desk if it would measured with different things? That is why all people use a ruler.

 A ruler is divided on inches. The rulers that we used is divided on 12 inches. In class when we measured sides of a book we made sure to match the begining of the ruler with the begining of a measured side of the book. A ruler has numbers from 0 to 12. We found that one side of the book was longer than other. 
Measuring is fun. Measuring we working on different skills- counting, number recognition, paying attention, eye hand coordination, and critical thinking.
As a part of homework, morah will give us rulers to take home. If our parents' permission we can explore around our houses and measure different things to see how long they are and how many inches long they are.
