Getting Around

This week we learned about different ways people getting around in the community. On Monday, we discussed different kinds of TRANSPORTATION that people use to get around. We noticed that people use cars, buses, trains and even bicycles. In the class we discussed the ways we get to the school, we found that most of the children are getting the car rides.

On Tuesday, we took a bus ride!!! We learned that every bus has a special name- a letter and a number. The letter means place where bus is. All Brooklyn buses have the letter B, all Manhattan buses – the letter M. We learned that buses will only stop at bus stops to pick up passengers. All adults must pay for a ride $ 2.25. They could use money or a metro card. Children like us get a FREE Ride! There are special safety rules on a bus:

Take a seat, or hold a pole, make yourself safe and comfortable, when we need to get off, use the stop requesting button.

On Wednesday, we talked about different road sings that help us and transportation to be safe on a road. We were talking about the Traffic Light. We took a walk and counted how many traffic lights are on our block, we noticed how cars stopped for a Red Light and then preceded riding on a Green Light. In class, we learned a song about the Traffic Light. TTTO (Twinkle, twinkle little star)

Twinkle, twinkle, Traffic Light
Round the corner shining bright
Red means STOP, Yellow means SLOW!
Green means SAFE! You can GO!

While walking, we noticed the place where there was not any traffic light. We were puzzled about what to do, but some friends had an idea. Some children suggested stopping, thinking and making a Right Choice. We stopped and decided to look to both sides of the road for cars. We saw an upcoming car; we stopped and waited until the car approached. Then the driver stopped the car and showed us that we can cross the road safely. The driver showed how to be thoughtful and be safe on the road! Crossing the road, we noticed special white stripes that make road look like a zebra. Morah told us that there is a special place where people can safely cross a road- cross walk. We all agreed that it is dangerous to cross the street in the middle of the road because of traffic.

Thursday:

On Thursday we took a special ride on the Q Train! We got on at Brighton Beach Avenue and went to Stillwell Ave. There we noticed that there were Traffic lights even for trains. It was reallly neat to see all the different trains coming and going. We saw the D, F, N and Q train. We even got to talk to a train conducter who told us what his job is. We were very safe on the train and stayed seated the whole ride until it was our time to get off.

On the Q train!

We got to meet a conductor!

Here we are figuring our where we are and where the train goes.
